Spoilers: I am playing one of two protagonists from a horror mystery podcast and as a result there's going to be various spoilers for season one of Malevolent in my tags. I'll keep it as generic as possible, but the clues will be there nonetheless haha. oh my god this is so hard. I'm sorry, I'm sorry this guy is a walking spoiler I'm so sorry it's going to just be unavoidable sometimes I'm so sorry-

In brief:

John Doe here is a disembodied voice given form. Usually he's trapped in the head of some guy named Arthur Lester, but for game purposes he's free right now. He got trapped after some funny business with a book happened while he was trying to get back to our world from some place called the Dark World, and anything more than that is Malevolent spoilers.

Speaking of which I'm caught up to the latest episode and fuck this podcast for making me cry

John is, well, he's trying to solve the mystery of how he got stuck in that book and then in Arthur, and also he's trying to get his own body (so, I guess mission accomplished in the Come Sail Away setting?), and he's trying not to end up back in the dark world. as the dark world is discussed as someplace things go when they die, this means he's sometimes very cautious and almost paranoid.

To that end, he can be ruthless, but... He's trying. He's sympathetic towards monsters with humanity to them, because he's not sure he himself was something good before the whole book thing.

Yet, he's also an asshole, and like any backseat gamer is frustrated when some people can't follow instructions or make bad choices, Arthur. He seems to have been in that book long enough to have forgotten his manners, so he can be commanding or, if you're in a snitty argument with him, he'll say very hurtful things. It's hard to say how much he means some of the things he's said and how much he was just finding the most hurtful thing he can say to hurt whoever he's arguing with. He wants to be a better person, but he is essentially starting from scratch here. He's trying.

IC
Fighting/wounding: hell yes give it to him
Killing: also hell yes but contact me for best results or else I'll assume we're doing a dance of near-misses
Physical Affection: go ahead and try. no seriously the man has never felt an affectionate touch.

Mind Reading: You're welcome to try, but anything deeper than a surface thought and we're going to have to talk sanity damage lmao. Surface thoughts therefore come with some absolutely bad 'DO NOT DIG DEEPER' vibes. THIS IS NOT A PLACE OF HONOUR

OOC
Backtagging: I'll continue a thread up to a month, then we can work out a way to handwave it!
Reminders: god please my schedule is a mess right now and my inbox is a nightmare
Revisions: if you'd like me to redo a tag, give me the head's up!

Warnings: John is from a horror mystery podcast themed around eldritch horrors, and as such there can be horror elements such as gore and unreality and casual talk of 'madness' in his tags. I'll warn for anything major of course, but bear this in mind.
Also he's kind of an asshole.

History:

Got stuck in a big ol’ cursed book while trying to escape a place called ‘The Dark World’, and with little memory of who he was he’s stuck around in Arthur Lester’s head ever since. Had a character arc while Arthur was in a coma for a month, where he realized what it was like to rely on someone for something other than their use, and that even if lifespans are trivial, there can be meaning found within that limited time. He had a lot to think about in that time.

That’s the non-spoilered version, here’s the full story: Wiki link

Actually wiki sucks, here: Once upon a time, a cult tried to open a portal for Shub-Niggurath, but they were foiled. However, while the dimensional door was open, something else tried to slip through. That something was sealed in a book while the portal closed, and over time it forgot what it was or where it came from.

At some point, someone found the book and opened it. The entity within killed her.

Later, the book gets sent to the office of a pair of private investigators, possibly in error. Arthur Lester opens it, and the entity enters his mind, takes over his eyes, and somehow, kills his partner.

Over time, the two of them discover that the something else that slipped through the gate was a Great Old One known as the King in Yellow, and John was that fragment of him trapped first in the book and then in Arthur’s head. The first season of the podcast ends with a cult dedicated to the King in Yellow performing a ritual to complete the King in Yellow’s arrival onto Earth by rejoining his fragmented pieces and offering Arthur as a vessel.

However, the King cannot take every last piece of Arthur, as the fragment that is John is too intertwined with Arthur’s memories and being. John refuses to let go of Arthur and allow him to be erased, and so the King brings the two of them into his realm. Season two begins with John in Arthur’s head and eyes still, having been tempted to rejoin but ultimately choosing not to become the King in Yellow once again (and not to erase Arthur).

Powers/Abilities:

If he touches a body with his left hand, he can see a vision of how they died. It is not very pleasant for him going by the podcast audio, the kind of thing that might tear at his sanity. He is understandably reluctant to do it - or rather, was reluctant to have Arthur do it, as it was an ability Arthur gained while they were together.

And not a power nor ability, but since I’ve removed him from Arthur’s head he has a body that reflects how much of Arthur he’s claimed. Namely, he has eyes (and the eyelids/flesh around them), a left hand up to about the elbow, maybe higher, and a left foot up to the knee. The rest of him is there, but invisible (or if that’s not workable for you, a smokey/cloudy silhouette). His body still exists, he can get harmed by anything passing through there, but while solid it doesn’t feel like skin and flesh.

Or, in video game terms, he’s a reskin of Arthur’s model but only has proper texture for the eyes, arm, and leg, the rest of it is a graphics error.

Inventory: A set of tight-fitting black robes, including a tight fitting hood and something like gloves and ‘socks’, a larger, coarser dirty yellow robe overtop of it, that catches the light in some places as if it were once golden and glorious. A mask with no mouth and oval-shaped eyes, with crude-cut corners shaping the forehead and jaw, made of a thin stone or a heavy plaster. It resembles a Bauta mask.

Job History:
1934, Arkham
Arthur Lester’s Eyes, occasionally hand
Responsibilities:
Described locations, items, object, people, situation, with a focus on the most relevant details for the situation
Stayed alert for danger, warned when necessary (or felt like it)
Reading sanity damaging texts in unknown languages, reporting visions seen by touch
Assisted defending Arthur when possible

Time unknowable- 1924, Carcossa
[REDACTED]
Responsibilities:
[REDACTED]

Suppressions:
Having come from the end of season one, spoilers abound here: knowing now that he is the King in Yellow, and aware of much of what he did as the King, his suppressions now lie mainly in acknowledging that this is something he could be again, either by his own actions or by the King somehow finding him here, and forcing him to return.

His goals are to change, to become a better person, and there may be concern that this isn’t possible. It’s also incredibly, incredibly tempting to be a complete asshole to other people, to push people away, to be harmful, to use what people have told him against them, especially (and mainly) when his own feelings are hurt. He feels guilt about this, incredibly. Change is very hard.

Greatest Fear: Losing Arthur, losing all the meaning he found, returning to the Dark World or becoming whole with the King again.

Greatest Desire: To have his own body, to exist outside of the King, to experience life and the meaning that can be found in it.

Greatest Regret: Alongside much of his actions prior to being stuck in (and freed from) the Dark World, the time he nearly took Arthur’s entire body and became the King in Yellow once more.
